The Lotus Project is using the arts to create more welcoming pathways into community theatre.

Thanks to a new Arts & Science Council grant, the Charlotte nonprofit is offering free theatre workshops for transgender and gender-diverse community members in partnership with Charlotte Trans Health, Time Out Youth and Gender Education Network.

Designed for beginners, the workshops combine visual art, theatre games and musical theatre while creating an affirming space where participants can explore creativity, build community and, if they choose, join this fall's production of 'Shrek the Musical.'

The world lost a beloved actor today.

Best known as Dr. Alan Grant in the "Jurassic Park" franchise, Sam Neill died Monday at age 78 after a career that spanned more than five decades.

Beyond his work on screen, Neill became a respected LGBTQ+ ally. In 2016, he publicly criticized Australia's failure to legalize same-s*x marriage, calling on lawmakers to "just get up and pass the bill" and questioning what was wrong with the country's "constipated parliament."

Neill also appeared in the LGBTQ-themed drama "Little Fish" and later said one of the biggest regrets of his career was turning down the role of Bernadette in "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert."

President Donald Trump has recommended that South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appoint Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, to serve the remainder of his Senate term.

Graham died July 11 at age 71. If appointed, Nordone would serve until early January while South Carolina voters choose a senator through a special election process already underway.
