In response to a nationwide trend in gun-related crime, the Oklahoma City Police Department began tracking guns reported stolen from vehicles last summer.

From June to December 2022, of 364 guns reported stolen, 137 were stolen from locked vehicles and 227 from unlocked vehicles, with some turning up later after being used in crimes. With half of 2023 over, gun thefts for the year are trending higher, according to OKCPD.

Fi****ms are stolen from vehicles most frequently in South Carolina, Texas, Georgia, and in Tennessee, where four cities, Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga and Jackson, each reported over 1,000 guns stolen from cars every year since 2020.

Three quick and easy ways good guys with guns can help prevent bad guys from getting guns:

✅ Remove fi****ms from your vehicle if you are not in it.
✅ If you need to leave them in a vehicle, store them in a locked box or safe secured to the vehicle that is not visible.
✅ Lock your vehicle.
