When someone gets lost in a space you designed, you usually never hear about it.
They don't file a complaint. They don't call the project manager. Most people simply absorb the confusion, recalibrate, and move on. Sometimes they miss their gate. Sometimes they choose the wrong entrance. Sometimes they arrive flustered to something important without ever realizing the building contributed to that experience.
The cost is real. It just doesn't show up on a punch list.
Confusing environments usually aren't the result of bad design. More often, they're the result of the right design conversation happening too late. By the time signage enters the discussion, many of the decisions that shape wayfinding have already been made. Ceiling heights, corridor widths, sightlines, and arrival sequences all influence how people move through a space long before the first sign is installed.
People begin reading a building before they ever read a sign. They follow light, openness, proportions, and the path that feels most intuitive. When the architecture and the communication system work together, people rarely notice. They simply feel comfortable, confident, and able to focus on where they're going instead of figuring out how to get there.
That's why I believe environmental graphic design is about much more than signage. When EGD is part of the conversation early, it isn't correcting the architecture. It's completing it.
The cost of a confusing environment is invisible because people quietly absorb the extra effort and move on. The value of integrating environmental graphic design early is just as invisible.
Everything simply works.

People sometimes ask me why I started Dazu Creative.
Looking back, it really came down to one recurring experience.
I'd work on projects where the architecture was beautiful, the interiors were thoughtfully designed, and every detail had been carefully considered. Then, near the end of the project, someone would ask, "What about the signs?"
By then, the opportunity to shape how people actually experienced the space had often passed.
That experience stayed with me.
Over time, I realized environmental graphic design is about so much more than signs. It's about helping people understand a place. It's about reducing stress, creating clarity, and making environments feel welcoming from the moment someone arrives.
That's why I started Dazu Creative.
More than twenty years later, I still love helping clients think about communication as part of the architecture, not something that's added after the fact.
It's work that combines strategy, design, psychology, and storytelling, and I can't imagine doing anything else.
Have you ever visited a place that felt immediately intuitive? Or one that left you completely turned around? I'd love to hear about it.
