The FASTER acronym stands for Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, and Research Act. The law has broad impact for people in the United States living with food allergies. The new FASTER Act law accomplishes two key things:
- Adds sesame to the list of major allergens food companies must label by law. Milk, eggs, soy, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and crustacean shellfish were already major allergens on the list.
- Directs the federal government to analyze food allergy research and advise where resources should go to promote the prevention, treatment, and cure of food allergies.
Under the new FASTER Act law, food manufacturers have until January 1, 2023 to update labels of products containing sesame.
