Wyoming National Guard

The Wyoming National Guard was honored to participate in Cheyenne's America 250 celebration, joining thousands of residents and visitors to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

From a UH-60 Black Hawk flyover that opened the parade, to Soldiers and Airmen marching together through downtown, presenting the colors during the ceremony, a C-130 Hercules flyover during the National Anthem and connecting with families during the Touch-a-Truck event, the Cowboy Guard was proud to stand alongside the communities we serve.

As Gov. Mark Gordon reminded everyone with a resounding, "Powder River, Let 'er Buck!" the celebration reflected the enduring spirit of Wyoming and the nation.

For 250 years, Americans have answered the call to serve. Today, the Wyoming National Guard proudly continues that legacy, serving Wyoming, serving America.

250 years ago, a declaration changed the course of history.

On July 9, 1776, after the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, Gen. George Washington gathered his Soldiers in New York City to hear its words read aloud. Those words inspired a fight for freedom that continues to shape our nation today.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal..."

From the very beginning, it has been the citizen-Soldier who answered the call. Farmers, tradesmen and neighbors laid down their tools, picked up their muskets and stood together to defend the ideals of liberty and self-government.

That legacy lives on through today's National Guard. For nearly 250 years, the men and women of the Wyoming National Guard have carried forward that same commitment—serving their communities, defending our nation and protecting the freedoms entrusted to every generation.

Freedom has never been free. It has always required ordinary Americans willing to do extraordinary things in service to something greater than themselves.

As George Washington reminded us:

"Be Americans. Let there be no sectionalism, no North, South, East or West. You are all dependent on one another and should be one in union. In one word, be a nation. Be Americans, and be true to yourselves."

Today, we celebrate our independence, honor those who came before us and reaffirm our commitment to preserving the freedoms they fought to secure.
