Congratulations to Commissioner Brandon Johnson for making it to the run off to be mayor of Chicago! We have to make sure he wins, or it'll be a huge setback!

By the way, did you know this process is unnecessary? This runoff process is a failure of the city government (like most governments of the US) to implement a more robust democratic system of voting. The system that we currently have in the city is a form of a plurality vote with a double election (not a primary/general) if the initial winner does not get 50% of the vote.

The most robust and efficient democratic systems of voting are versions of ranked choice voting (RCV). The main form of RCV allows everyone an iterative say in choosing the winner up until someone acquires 50% or more of the vote. This works in rounds that do not require multiple elections. In each round, the lowest vote getter is eliminated and those votes pass to the voters' second choice candidates to give those voters a say in the possible candidates. This process iterates until a candidate reaches at least 50% of the vote.
