In 1984, *The Karate Kid* premiered, a film surrounded by fascinating behind-the-scenes stories. One of the most remarkable is a tale of mutual humility.

The role of Mr. Miyagi was initially offered to Fumio Demura, a 9th Dan in Sh*to-Ryu Karate and a highly respected sensei. Demura turned it down, stating he wasn’t prepared as an actor and didn’t want to jeopardize the film.

The role then went to Pat Morita, an experienced actor but not a martial artist. Morita agreed to take on the project only if Demura performed the Karate scenes, out of respect for the martial art, acknowledging it takes a lifetime to master.

This collaboration between Demura and Morita brought authenticity and depth to the character of Miyagi, creating one of cinema most iconic mentors.
