Trap Door is thrilled to be participating in the International Voices Project again this year representing Ukraine with a staged reading on May 14th at 6PM at the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago!

GOLEM
Written by Sasha Denisova
Translated by Maria Saltykova
Directed by Kay Martinovich

Featuring: Joan Nahid and Manuela Rentea. Stage Managed by Gary Damico.

Max’s ex-wife Marta, a bohemian New Yorker, arrives in Ukraine to bury him—only to find his young widow Maria refusing the funeral, insisting Max is still alive and has been returning to her. Drawn back into the apartment where their youthful dreams once took shape, Marta begins to believe her—until she discovers a strange, haunting doll in the wardrobe, sewn from pillows with a face made of Max’s photographs. Half-alive and deeply loved, this uncanny stand-in pulls Marta into Maria’s world, where they dine with him, argue over his love, and read from The Golem—a story of a man created but never truly alive. A surreal and unsettling exploration of grief, love, and the refusal to let go.
