Earth’s energy balance has reached its most extreme state ever, signaling an unprecedented and accelerating climate shift.

The World Meteorological Organization’s latest annual climate checkup reveals a sobering reality: Earth’s climate is dangerously out of balance, with no historical precedent for the current rate of change. The period from 2015 to 2025 now officially stands as the 11 hottest years on record, marking a decade of relentless warming. For the first time, the agency’s report included a specific indicator for the planet's energy imbalance, confirming that the gap between incoming solar energy and outgoing heat is wider than it has ever been since observations began.

While this imbalance has been steadily climbing since 1960, the data shows a sharp and alarming acceleration over the last 20 years. This lopsided 'heat ledger' suggests that the Earth is retaining energy at a rate that far outpaces its natural ability to radiate it back into space.
