The 2022 launch of the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline is continuing to prove what so many advocates, providers, and communities have been fighting for: accessibility that saves lives.
A new study published in JAMA found that youth su***des in the U.S. dropped 11% below projected rates following the rollout of 988, with the biggest declines happening in states that saw the highest use of the hotline. That translates to more than 4,300 lives saved among young people ages 15–34.
This is more than a statistic. It’s proof that when we invest in mental health infrastructure, crisis response, and accessible support systems, people get the help they need in their hardest moments.
The findings also reinforce something important: su***de prevention must remain proactive, visible, and funded. Programs like 988 work best when communities know they exist, trust them, and can access them without barriers.
Every conversation matters. Every resource matters. Every connection matters.
If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 for immediate support.
