Heading home after another great State Policy Network Annual Meeting! It’s great to see solutions in action.

“I was always drawing, even as a kid. When I was in college, the local paper was looking for a cartoonist, and I took the job because I saw it as an opportunity to get my foot in the door to be a sports writer. I never thought it could be my career.

Then, I ended up meeting a cartoonist who did the Prickly City cartoon for the Chicago Tribune and did some work with him. From there, I ended up meeting Ryan Green, who gave me a job making political cartoons for Iron Light.

It’s not like I have a lot of other hobbies because drawing is my hobby. I just want to be creative. But I do love to read, I have a ton of books. I’ve been rereading Cormac McCarthy again since he passed away, but I’ll read anything. I’ve got books piled anywhere in no real order, except the books that I’m interested in reading soon are closer to me.

People know I’m pretty much a caricature of a cat guy and a Bears fan, and that’s true. I work in my dungeon with my cat, Beevo. He’s always around. We already had three cats and my wife’s friend kept pushing rescue cats on us. My wife kept saying ‘no,’ so her friend came to me instead and now we have four cats. I like working on my own like that. I like to get a task, then go off and think about it by myself until I hit on something.

Having this job feels like I’m cheating. I'm waiting to get to the end of this life and then say ‘I snuck through life being able to do this.’ I’d be drawing regardless, but it’s a big bonus to be able to do it for a living – and for something I care about. It’s a perfect fit.

It’s cool to be able to show my kids that you can do what you love to do – but, of course, they’re unimpressed with me because they’re teenagers.”
