How do Black Men define themselves?

The project, The Defining Portraits of Manhood, is a reflection of the principle of kujichagulia, the Swahili word for self determination. “If we define ourselves for ourselves, no one else can define us.”

This project celebrates Black Men, capturing them in the spaces that bring them joy, reflecting on their journey of manhood in their own words, and bringing to the forefront the power and strength in our community.

The first installation for this project celebrates three amazing men in different generations.
