For decades, LGBTQ+ people around the world looked to America as a place of safety.

Now, some are looking for a way out.

A new report from Rainbow Railroad, one of the world’s leading LGBTQ+ relocation organizations, says it is seeing a record number of requests from people in the United States seeking help to move abroad.

The numbers are striking.

Last year, nearly one-third of all requests received by the organization came from people living in the U.S.

Even more surprising, the vast majority of those requests came from American citizens rather than recent immigrants.

According to Rainbow Railroad, requests from the U.S. surged after the 2024 election, with many people citing concerns about anti-trans policies and the broader political climate.

At the same time, advocacy groups say hundreds of anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the country, creating particular anxiety for transgender Americans.

It’s important to note that most LGBTQ+ Americans are not leaving the country.

In fact, researchers say economics, jobs and family ties keep many people rooted where they are.

But for some, the question is no longer whether they feel welcome.

It’s whether they feel safe.
