Led by artists for artists, Slate is here to foster a greater New Media Art and Music community

After discussing plans for the future of Slate, we’ve decided that it’s best to leave our current storefront home and go on hiatus. It may be a long time before we can operate out of a physical location like we had in the old days, and our hopes for now are to reopen in a new location when that’s possible again.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped build this little community with us.

Enjoy some photos taken at our very first event weeks after signing a lease, making some social media posts, and convincing people we were a real gallery.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO OUR PATRONS:
Like you, we have been closely monitoring the evolving situation around COVID-19. At this time we at Slate feel it best to cancel all March events in hopes of preventing the spread of the virus. We appreciate your understanding and if you are able, hope you will support artists through purchasing merch and buying their music from bandcamp during these tough times.

Impro Jam Anniversary Compilation organized by Slate Arts And Performance 02/09/2020

The Impro Jam at Slate Arts is celebrating its two year anniversary!

Over the Impro Jam’s two years of existence the series has quickly become a hub for exploration, experimentation, and community in Chicago’s vibrant improvised music scene, bringing together improvisers of all disciplines and idioms in unique ways; ultimately resulting in an ever-evolving doorway to new ways of knowing improvised music practices.

Due to the tireless work of our resident archivists Dan Hansen and Erica Miller every piece of music performed at the Impro Jam since its inception has been recorded and catalogued, displaying an astounding breadth of work from the often young musicians who frequent the Impro Jam.

Due to said work of these archivists the Impro Jam, which takes $0 from any money brought into the series, and gives 100% of its donations directly to the artists hosting each session, has the unique ability to release an annual compilation of some of the most diverse and exploratory improvisations happening in Chicago.

We are asking for your support to continue this tradition of releasing a physical compilation to celebrate the 2019-2020 year of the series! We hope that you can help this project continue, as we at the Impro Jam feel the series and the subsequent compilation are critical to the continuation of the great practice of Chicago Improvised Music! All artists featured on the compilation will receive free copies of the physical CD, and any money brought in through the sale of the CD will go into funding improvements at Slate Arts and Performance.

Budget Breakdown:
100 CD Eco Packs - $125
Shipping/Misc Expenses - $25
Mixing/Mastering - done without charge by Adam Shead
Recording/Cataloging - Done without charge by Dan Hansen and Erica Miller
