An ice dam is essentially a "traffic jam" of ice that prevents melting snow from draining off your roof. While they appear on the roof and gutters, the root cause is actually inside your attic.
The Simple "Recipe" for an Ice Dam
An ice dam requires three specific ingredients to form:
* Snow on the roof.
* Heat escaping from your house to melt that snow.
* Cold on the eaves (the roof edge) to refreeze that meltwater.
How the Process Works
* Heat Loss: Warm air from your living space leaks into the attic. Because heat rises, it warms the upper portion of your roof deck (the wood under your shingles) to above 32°F (0°C).
* Melting: The snow sitting on top of this warmed section melts, turning into water.
* Running Down: The water runs down the slope of the roof under the snow blanket.
* Refreezing: When the water reaches the eaves (the overhang of the roof that sticks out past the walls), it hits a cold spot. Since the eaves are not over the heated living space, they remain at the freezing outdoor temperature. The water freezes instantly, forming a rim of ice.
* Backing Up: As more snow melts and runs down, it hits this rim of ice and has nowhere to go. It pools up behind the dam, eventually backing up under your shingles and leaking into your home.
The Specific Culprits
While the weather provides the snow, your home's structure usually provides the heat. Here are the specific defects that cause this cycle:
* Air Leaks (The #1 Cause): Small gaps allow warm indoor air to bypass your insulation and enter the attic. Common leak spots include:
- Around recessed (can) lights.
- The attic hatch or pull-down stairs.
- Around chimneys and plumbing vent pipes.
- Gaps in drywall or electrical wire penetrations.
* Insufficient Insulation: If your insulation is too thin or has moved, conductive heat passes through the ceiling directly into the attic space.
* Poor Ventilation: A "healthy" attic in winter should be the same temperature as the outdoors. If your soffit vents (intake) or ridge vents (exhaust) are blocked or inadequate, the warm air gets trapped in the attic rather than being flushed out by cold outside air.
* Clogged Gutters: While gutters don't create the heat, if they are full of leaves and debris, they trap the first bit of meltwater. This creates a foundation for the ice dam to build upon much faster.
