How this story came to be is a super interesting story in itself. In 2019, while reading through George A. Romero’s Archival Collection at the University of Pittsburgh’s Library, Kraus found a half-finished novel called Pay the Piper. Apparently, only a few people had heard of it at the time. Years later, Kraus worked with Romero’s estate to make the unfinished novel a reality.
SUMMARY: All of her life, Renée Pontiac has heard stories of “the Piper”, a murderous swamp entity haunting the bayou in Alligator Point, Louisiana. The horrific legend appears to be true when children are being taken and gruesomely murdered. To resist, Pontiac and the town’s folk will need to acknowledge the sins of their ancestors because if they don’t, it’s going to be time to pay the piper 👀
What a great story to kick off spooky season with!🍁🍂🎃 I’m currently reading this novel, but what I’ve read so far has been enjoyable. The cover is eye candy everytime I pick up the book 😍 I’ve always found Louisiana culture and their myths and legends quite intriguing, but I’ve never read a horror novel in that setting. As someone who’s favorite horror stories consist of slashers, this kind of antagonist is unique and refreshing. The “Piper” is still a mystery to me, but it’s already creepier than what you’d think a swamp monster would be 🐙 I’m really curious how that character will evolve as I read further.
