To those who lost loved ones to OUD or opioid overdoses,
If opioids prescribed by a doctor led your child, spouse, parent, or other relative to OUD and/or overdose death, this letter applies to you.
On Monday, May 5th, the FDA will hold an Advisory Committee Meeting to review studies of adverse effects from long-term use of prescription opioids. The pharmaceutical industry designed the studies, which makes their methodology suspect. The FDA doesn't release the results until 2 days before the meeting, so we don't know what they will show.
The FDA has always behaved as though prescription opioids are safer than they are. For years, they accepted the pharmaceutical industry's narrative that there were two types of patients using long-term opioids: chronic pain patients and drug abusers. They did not recognize all those whose medical use of opioids led to addiction.
Pain and side effects are largely subjective. Death is not. Even if the FDA tries to whitewash the adverse effects of prescription opioids, our loved ones who died or developed OUD after being prescribed opioids are proof of the risks of these drugs.
So far, almost all comments to the FDA about this meeting are from chronic pain patients who state that they did not misuse prescription opioids and that their lives are much worse since they’ve been taken off prescription opioids.
The FDA needs to hear from those whose experience demonstrates just how dangerous these drugs are.
It’s easy to make a comment that will be read by the FDA. Go to https://www.regulations.gov/document/FDA-2024-N-5331-0003 and click on “Comment.”
Let them know the devastating effects of prescribed opioids on the life of your loved one and on your life.
Don’t delay. All comments are due by Sunday night, May 4th, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time.
