Plant Daddy: Plants in frost, pots vs. the ground & more 05/01/2026

Brrrr.... a cold morning today. But happy May! (Even if it feels like March this morning). The first day of May is also the halfway point between the spring equinox and summer solstice. So summer, despite this morning's chill, is right around the corner.

In case you missed it last weekend, here's the Plant Daddy segment from last Saturday. A fresh segment drops on the WGN Morning News tomorrow at 7:25 and 9:25a.

Plant Daddy: Plants in frost, pots vs. the ground & more CHICAGO (WGN) – WGN’s “Plant Daddy” Tim Joyce is back to share some weekend gardening tips, including what plants can handle the frost, choosing to plant in a pot versus the ground and more. Got an…

NEXT 24 HOURS for Chicagoland will be a bit above average for temps. Tonight, building SSE winds will keep our temps pretty steady in the mid to low 50s. The average low is in the 40s for this part of spring.

Tomorrow, clouds & sun to start with a couple pre-frontal showers a possibility. The main event should arrive in the mid-afternoon with a few rounds of strong to severe t'storms possible. Average high is 63.

I'll be updating the forecast coming up on the WGN TV Evening News in a little bit, starting at 5p.

7 DAY OUTLOOK: Sunshine emerges from the fog & clouds away from the lake. That's where we'll see temps in the seasonal mid to low 60s. Towards the city & lake cooler and cloudier where highs will feel more like March than the last weekend of April.

Tomorrow, warmer but storm potential by the mid-afternoon and some could be strong to severe. High temps in the low 70s. We do get into a much calmer but cooler weather pattern for the last days of April and start of May. Highs on Wed/Thu/Fri will struggle to get to 60-- especially by the lake. Next weekend is trending back towards sunny and milder.

I'll be updating the forecast coming up tonight on the WGN TV Evening News at 5/9/10p.

WGN Wake Up Weather: Clouds and fog start the day for Chicagoland with the densest fog out towards DeKalb where visibility is only about a quarter mile. Away from the lake clouds part for some sunshine and temps getting into the seasonal mid to low 60s.

Closer to the lake, chillier and cloudier for longer. High temps likely only upper 40s and low 50s again. We do see milder weather coming into the forecast for tomorrow-- but it comes with potential storms as well. I'll have details on the WGN Morning News until 9a.

SATURDAY FORECAST & 7 DAY OUTLOOK: Fog is evaporating into some nice blue skies across Chicagoland. High temps today get into the low 60s inland but only in the mid 50s by the lake.

Partly cloudy skies this evening with clouds returning by daybreak. Tomorrow a lot like today, with clouds in the morning-- sun in the afternoon and temps in the seasonal 60s.

Warmer & muggier on Monday with rain returning in the afternoon/evening in the form of possible strong to severe t'storms.

Some good news though, only the Fox River remains under a Flood Warning. The river crested on Thursday and will continue to fall over the weekend. The warning on the Des Plaines River was pulled this morning.

After Monday, our weather looks calm for many days in a row. But it will also be a tad chillier than the mid to low 60s we usually get for late April and early May.

I'll be updating the forecast tonight on the WGN TV Evening News tonight. Hope to see ya then!
