Today, June 1, the Northern Illinois Transit Authority (NITA) Act goes into effect. Along with being a major step forward in creating an integrated transportation system for the Chicago metropolitan region, the law also mandates Metra to transition from commuter rail service to true regional rail. The NITA Act also kickstarts a study to extend Metra to Kankakee.

The fight is not yet over, but this is a big day for transit advocates everywhere. We thank our Illinois coalition partners for their years of hard work to notch this huge victory.

"The Department of Transportation will provide $465.8 million in funding for an overhaul of Washington Union Station, including structural repairs and enhancements to the passenger concourse and Amtrak lounge, the agency announced today.
