In an Italy of Many Voices, Emma Dante’s Plays Speak ‘the Language of the People’ 06/09/2026

Delighted to see this well-deserved attention to the works of Sicilian playwright and filmmaker Emma Dante in the The New York Times!

Swan Isle Press published the first major English of translation of Emma Dante's plays a few years ago, brilliantly translated by Francesca Spedalieri from the original Sicilian, Neapolitan, and Italian.

Excerpt from the The New York Times article and interview by Laura Capelle reporting from Rome.

"Few artists working today are as closely identified with Sicily as the theater director Emma Dante. Her first stage hit, “In Palermo,” from 2001, was named for her hometown and featured the local dialect. From 2008 onward, the city also housed her company’s work space, La Vicaria, from which her international career took flight.

"Yet last year, Dante closed La Vicaria and moved to Rome. The decision, she said recently at her new home, was the result of a lack of public support in Sicily — in spite of the cultural cachet she brought to Palermo’s vernacular language, which is rarely heard onstage.

"“I’ve never knocked on the doors of power or been tied to any political group — so in Palermo, the institutions never helped me,” she said. “At a certain point, I couldn’t take it anymore.”

"The change of scenery comes at a moment of international acclaim for Dante’s brand of physical theater, which explores the lives of dysfunctional families and social outsiders with biting humor. This year, Dante made her directing debut at the Comédie-Française, the venerable French ensemble, and on Friday she will receive the prestigious Golden Lion award for lifetime achievement at the Venice Theater Biennale."
