The Chicago region is experiencing a housing crisis. Many people are struggling with high rent, eviction risk, and lost or unstable income.
United Way of Metro Chicago is responding.
β‘οΈ Through our Response Fund, United Way is investing $250,000 in 20 organizations to immediately address housing and homelessness prevention β a need that continues to rise, according to recent 211 Metro Chicago data.
Our 24/7 social services helpline saw a 56% increase in housing-related requests from Cook County residents in April 2026 compared to April 2025. Housing support also made up 65% of all needs identified through 2-1-1. π
π¬ βWeβre seeing a sharp rise in calls to 211 Metro Chicago for housing support as instability grows for direct service providers and gaps widen in the local safety net. Response grants are a critical part of our strategy to ensure every individual and family can meet their basic needs β addressing urgent crises through the Response Fund, sustaining more than 130 nonprofits through impact grants, connecting residents to help through 2-1-1, and using that data to guide smarter investments.β β Sean Garrett, United Way of Metro Chicago President & CEO
