To make carbonic acid and support bicarbonate buffering, the body relies on carbonic anhydrase, a zinc-dependent enzyme.

In a state of copper overload, copper blocks zinc from doing its job, and when zinc is blocked from activating that enzyme, carbonic acid production shuts down.

Your kidneys rely on that carbonic acid to maintain acid-base balance, and without it, your bicarbonate buffering system cannot function.

The result shows up on standard blood work as a high anion gap and low CO₂, which tells you that your body is running too acidic.

Addressing copper overload is essential for restoring proper acid-base balance.

Copper imbalance disrupts apoptosis, the process of programmed cell death that normally eliminates damaged cells before they become a problem.

When apoptosis is overly active, it destroys neurons and drives brain diseases like MS, ALS, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's.

When apoptosis fails to work, cells grow and divide unchecked, forming tumors and eventually becoming malignant cancer.

Copper dysregulation is the common thread between neurodegeneration on one hand and cancer on the other, with no good outcome when this mineral is out of balance.

Ceruloplasmin is a massive copper-based enzyme with over one thousand amino acids, and one of its main functions is to oxidize ferrous iron into the ferric form so the body can use it.

Without this conversion by ceruloplasmin, iron cannot bind to transferrin or reach the bone marrow for hemoglobin production.

Most iron deficiency anemia is actually caused by this copper enzyme problem, not by low dietary iron intake.

Understanding this connection explains why iron supplements alone often fail to resolve anemia when copper is dysregulated.
