The Lurie Children’s Hospital, completed in 2010, holds a special place in many hearts. It is a nationally-ranked pediatric care facility that provides comfort and support to countless families.
The hospital has 360 beds, and its iconic design features a cantilevered structure spanning over 12 stories, creating a sense of awe and wonder. The 12th floor is designed with a replica fire truck and a treehouse play area to bring joy to the young patients. The hospital is committed to environmentally friendly design, reflected in its LEED Silver Certifications, showing dedication to sustainability and the well-being of its community. Additionally, the provision of private patient rooms, family lounges, and play areas emphasizes the hospital’s focus on creating a comforting environment for families.
CSG was responsible for the installation of steel and decking on this remarkable structure. It is often said that details matter, and in the case of this hospital, that statement holds true. The Pierce Fire Company generously donated a replica fire engine cab for the children to enjoy. CSG was honored to assist in creating a hoisting platform that facilitated the placement of the cab after the steel er****on was complete. Every detail was meticulously addressed to help bring joy to the patients who need it the most.
The children receiving treatment were invited to help name the two tower cranes that erected the structure. They fittingly chose the names Hope and Courage. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when the names were announced. These names truly reflect the compassionate care provided by the hospital.

Complex Structures Group completed the structural steel and decking for the East Side Athletic & Academic Addition project for New Trier Township High School Winnetka, Illinois in early 2023. This project showcased our team’s expertise in advanced er****on engineering, logistics, and scheduling.
The project included 132-foot-long trusses, with the heaviest one weighing 110,000 lbs. A special route had to be 3-D scanned to ensure the crane could reach the site without contacting low overpasses. Once on site, the MLC 300 had to descend a large, engineered crane ramp to assemble and set the trusses within the footprint of the building. By utilizing advanced engineering techniques and emphasizing quality and safety, the project went on without a hitch.
The heavy floor trusses were assembled on the ground utilizing a jig and surveyed lines to ensure the dimensions and design camber were spot on. The 17’ deep trusses were stick-built and utilized shoring to maintain stability and design requirements. Rolled roof trusses were unitized on the ground and a secondary crane was brought in to set the infill, thus maintaining the roof truss stability.
The project team came together to successfully navigate challenges caused by site constraints, tie into the existing 120-year-old structure, and schedule the er****on and decking on concrete and masonry bearing connections amid a concrete shortage.
