Illinois' new "squatter law," Senate Bill 1563, signed in July 2025 and effective January 1, 2026, empowers law enforcement to remove individuals illegally occupying a property, clarifying that civil eviction processes don't block criminal trespass enforcement, allowing police to act on criminal trespassing charges to return homes to rightful owners faster than traditional lengthy eviction court cases.
