People living near the newly opened Obama Presidential Center have been speaking out against rising rents and deteriorating conditions at a nearby apartment building as they continue to organize and fight toward their goal of preventing displacement.

Residents of the building at 7500 S. South Shore, which was also the site of a high-profile immigration raid last summer, say they experienced rodent infestations, broken appliances, plumbing issues, and ignored calls from property management while living there.

“Organizing puts us in a better position,” said Mashawnda Price, who lived at the South Shore building. “The fight is not over, but at the end of the day, I was still displaced from my home.”
