-WARNING-
When the temperatures reach 100 degrees and higher valley oaks close their stomata to conserve water. This, along with little to no wind, can lead to sudden limb failure. Be careful not to seek out shade under mature valley oaks in the evenings following these high temperatures. If you hear loud popping sounds, run away from trunk as fast as possible.
Any tree is susceptible to limb failure, but mature valley oaks are known for this behavior.
End weight reduction on the heavy cantilevered branches is a must to decrease the chance of such an event.
Droppin’ top.
