1968’s Witchfinder General (also known as The Conqueror Worm), directed my Michael Reeves, is set during the British Civil War as Matthew Hopkins is appointed Witchfinder General to hunt down and persecute witches. The void in authority left in the Civil War’s wake leaves Hopkins (Vincent Price) to abuse his power and become something much more frightening than witchcraft.

A brutal and intense film, this is the violent arm of the Folk Horror Unholy Trinity, and packs a heavy punch.

Of course, it wouldn’t be without a Midsommar poster. 🌞

2019’s Pagan Cult film directed by Ari Aster is a mainstay in any Folk Horror fan’s collection. Harkening the Wicker Man, it brings Pagan Death Cults to the mainstream. It’s bright, it’s heavy, and while the majority of the gore is off screen it’s horrifying.

Midsommar is always in my May Day movie rotation.
