A few street-photo edits from our final days in Italy (Rome).
Across Venice, Florence, Sorrento, Rome, and several smaller towns in between, we averaged roughly 18,000 to nearly 20,000 steps a day. By the end of the trip, that added up to around 160 Italian miles walked per person.
So yes, we are absolutely going to talk about—and post—a ridiculous amount of food. But there is zero guilt attached after walking those miles in 98–105° heat every day.
What I did not expect was how much it would mean to unplug for 2½ weeks. Keeping the news off. Not scrolling social media. Just being present with my family, surrounded by people from all over the world sharing crowded streets, long dinners, sunsets, music, wine, espresso, and gelato.
Italy felt welcoming. It felt safe. It felt alive. Locals and tourists from every background seemed to coexist with an ease that was beautiful to witness—clean streets, packed public spaces, late nights, families everywhere, and a general feeling that people belonged there.
That feeling was powerful, and honestly, a little heartbreaking. It made me realize how much I want that same openness, safety, and shared humanity to feel more common in our own country. We are capable of it. We should expect it from ourselves.
Happy 250th, USA. I hope we can soon again become a place where more people from other countries can feel welcome, safe, and free to share a meal, a sunset, and a little joy with one another…
