Recent research confirms that gum disease may double the risk of high blood pressure.
A diagnosis of gum disease is associated with higher odds of hypertension, independent of common cardiovascular risk factors. Individuals with gum disease are twice as likely to have high systolic blood pressure values equal to or greater than 140 mm HG, compared to people with healthy gums.

Both gum disease and high blood pressure are 'silent' diseases that normally don't cause any significant symptoms until it's too late. Annual medical evaluations and dental evaluations are important. There is a connection between celiac disease and gum disease. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to react to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. This reaction can lead to inflammation and damage in the small intestine, as well as other parts of the body, including the gums.

Research has shown that individuals with celiac disease may be at a higher risk of developing periodontitis and that treating celiac disease may also improve oral health. In one study, individuals with celiac disease had more severe periodontitis and a greater prevalence of gum bleeding than those without celiac disease. A special reunion 22 years in the making at the Ohio Academy of Periodontists meeting in Columbus this weekend.
