June is Men's Health Month. Statistically, men are less likely to take care of their oral health than women. Good periodontal health and oral health are essential components of whole body health and wellness, especially for men. Gum disease has been shown to be more common in men than women. Men are also less likely than women to seek preventive dental care and often neglect their oral health for years, visiting a dentist only when a problem arises.

The importance of practicing good home oral hygiene care and routine dental visits should not be overlooked. Oral health can deteriorate rapidly if the proper preventive measures are not followed. Wessel Periodontics encourages men and their loved ones to make it a goal to seek regular medical and dental advice and preventive care! See less

Recent research confirms that gum disease may double the risk of high blood pressure.
A diagnosis of gum disease is associated with higher odds of hypertension, independent of common cardiovascular risk factors. Individuals with gum disease are twice as likely to have high systolic blood pressure values equal to or greater than 140 mm HG, compared to people with healthy gums.

Both gum disease and high blood pressure are 'silent' diseases that normally don't cause any significant symptoms until it's too late. Annual medical evaluations and dental evaluations are important. Come see us at Wessel Periodontics for a comprehensive assessment of your gum health and to keep your mouth and body healthy!

There is a connection between celiac disease and gum disease. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to react to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. This reaction can lead to inflammation and damage in the small intestine, as well as other parts of the body, including the gums.

Research has shown that individuals with celiac disease may be at a higher risk of developing periodontitis and that treating celiac disease may also improve oral health. In one study, individuals with celiac disease had more severe periodontitis and a greater prevalence of gum bleeding than those without celiac disease. Come see us at Wessel Periodontics to learn how your oral health and gum health are linked to your whole body health and to address all of your gum treatment needs!

A special reunion 22 years in the making at the Ohio Academy of Periodontists meeting in Columbus this weekend. I couldn't ask for a better group of mentors, educators, professional colleagues and friends to have shared this journey with. Forever grateful and thankful to be part of the Ohio State Periodontics family. Hard to believe it has been 22 years and going stronger than ever!

The DEA (Drug enforcement Agency) National Prescription Drug Takeback Day is Saturday April 25, 2026! Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That's dangerous and can have tragic results. That's why it was great to see thousands of people from across the country clean out their medicine cabinets and turn in - safely and anonymously - a record amount of prescription drugs.

Wessel Periodontics fully supports the safe use and disposal of prescription medications and encourages you to take advantage of DEA Rx Takeback Day to discard unused medications!
