This is my grandpa, Benito Molina Jr., his brother, and friends playing at a show at the Y way back when. The video is of his father playing guitar. He was also a wonderful musician and beautiful soul that helped teach me how to play guitar. We use his guitar strap for all of our gigs. It’s really cool to be doing the same thing they were doing now. My grandpa and his family faced an immense amount of racism and bigotry, but that didn’t stop them from playing the music they loved.
My grandpa’s mother, Emma, was the Minority Affairs Director at the Community Action Agency in Findlay, OH, and spoke to President Carter about the conditions of migrant workers and people in poverty. She was an advocate for those who had no voice and was protective of her people. Feel free to read her speech to the President of the United States, sitting feet away from him. What a legacy to leave.
Music, caring for others, and activism is in my blood. If you follow me or Brian on our personal pages, you know how outspoken against the current administration we are, and consistently have been. In case it wasn’t clear, THE ROSES do not support MAGA or ICE in any way, shape, or form. We stand and will continue to fight for human dignity for all people, regardless of race, gender identity, sexual identity, or “citizen” status. If that makes you uncomfortable, this band is not for you. Our music is not for you. Most of the artists we play - their music has never been for you.
We’re aware that saying this on our band page might cause us to “lose followers and paying gigs,” but we have no interest in playing for people, or venues, who are hostile to the existence of myself, our family, our friends, and our neighbors.
Some of you may say, “quit being political and stick to music.” Our EXISTENCE is political. Music and the arts in general are, and always have been, political. If you support an administration that harms our communities you don’t get the privilege of having our music in your life.
Thanks for understanding.
