Ha! Today, my answer is “yes and no”. When I first started it was definitely “heck yes!”. There is something remarkable that happens when you develop a consistency in a working relationship…especially one grounded in safe environment dealing with personal issues and physical and emotional work. Yet, that isn’t to say, the client ‘should not ever’ go elsewhere. When I started out and was so insecure in many ways, it felt threatening to learn a client went elsewhere for whatever reason. Today, I no longer struggle with the same things as I did 20 years ago. If someone tells me they are going on vacation, I encourage them to get a session somewhere offering a technique I don’t provide. If a client is given a GC to someone else locally, I encourage them to use it - and then come back to tell me what they liked/didn’t like about it…so I can learn from it. , , , ,

Which side do YOU resonate with?

Initially, I was not excited about going to massage school. I had graduated with honors, been a Navy reservist and I had the two highest ranking Admirals recommending me for corporate positions - yet between Desert Shield and Desert Storm…no one would hire me. My attitude was less than stellar in school. I didn’t WANT to be there. But there was a day in the 2nd or 3rd week, when we were learning a particular technique dealing with head and neck issues. As I practiced it on my friend, something shifted - literally. We both said something professional, like: Oh S% #£! She told me she had had a really bad headache and, with that move, her pain was gone! I told her what I felt doing the work. It was like a switch flipped. I suddenly wanted to be there, I was a sponge soaking in the experience, a group of classmates then befriended me and we’d practice before/after class and during breaks. I never looked back.
