Thoughts about working the sides of the tip, which is often the most challenging part of finishing a reed. 👀
Maintain or support the curve of the tip against the plaque while scraping there- it takes a very sharp knife and a light touch- but doing so does fantastic things for the reed!
Hope what I am saying in this reel makes sense. I’ve seen to many reed makers focus on the sides of the tip in earnest, but use too much pressure and a dull knife, which leads to ripping off sides or taking too much off the entire tip. It’s a difficult skill to master, but transformative when you do! 🙂

Had a great time Double Reed Day yesterday! While the humidity was UNREAL (and my reeds were clearly in shock), it was an inspiring day of double reeding. So enjoyed getting to know the fabulous Dr. Sara Renner (fantastic teaching and performing!) and reconnecting with my former UA partner in crime (and all time favorite bassoonist) Dr. Scott Pool. An absolute bonus was meeting and performing with bassoonist Dr. Rick Barrantes Agüero. Absolutely lovely playing and fantastic human!
Beautiful campus, great TAMUCC students, and an all around inspiring day for us and the participants. Definitely an undiscovered Texas gem- highly recommend you check out TMUCC. Great double reed teaching, fabulous performance hall, and a brand new music building opening in 2027. Keep them on your radar!
