Most owners think their “rate” is what determines how much they pay. It isn’t.

1️⃣ INTERCHANGE — The Industry Cost Everyone Pays
Every processor from Stripe to your local bank pays a base cost to Visa, Mastercard, Amex or Discover. It’s called interchange and while you can’t negotiate it you can influence it.

When your transactions include billing ZIP codes, CVV or Level 2/3 data (common in B2B) they qualify for lower interchange categories.

In other words your setup determines how much you pay — not your volume or size.

2️⃣ PROCESSOR MARKUP — The Quiet Profit Zone

This is the layer no one explains clearly.

Processors add their own margin on top of interchange. Sometimes it’s reasonable. Other times it’s buried under confusing terminology that makes it impossible to track.

Small differences: a few tenths of a percent or an extra 5¢ per transaction, can easily add up to thousands per month.

That’s why transparency here is everything. If you can identify your markup you can negotiate or restructure it.
