Our neighbor's outdoor, near-feral kitty, Chestnut, likes to "run away from home" and visit us from time to time. Recently, he did so just as they were traveling to Israel for a week, so we acted as his caregiver in their absence and built quite a trusting relationship with him.

By the time they travel home, I was able to not only pet him but pick him up. Something only the mother in the family can do. I was able to hand-deliver him to her arms upon her return.
