For taxpayers who requested an extension, the final deadline to file 2025 federal income tax returns is October 15, 2026. This extension provides extra time to submit paperwork but NOT to pay taxes, as any tax owed was due on April 15, 2026. Missing this date may lead to penalties and interest on unpaid amounts.

Filing season kicks off today and the IRS expects about 164 million individual tax returns for tax year 2025.
