We’ve come a long way, baby! When our founder, dermatologist Perry Robins, MD, first started seeing patients with skin cancer in the 1960s and ’70s, they would often react to their diagnosis with shock. “Why didn’t anyone tell me the sun wasn’t good for me?” they’d ask.

As a pioneer of skin cancer surgery, Dr. Robins decided to do something: In 1979 he started The Skin Cancer Foundation to raise awareness about early detection, prevention and treatment.

Isn’t it surprising to know that 40 years ago, people didn’t understand the link between sun exposure and skin cancer? Thankfully, awareness is high today. In May, as we celebrate our 40th birthday and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we reaffirm our mission to reduce the prevalence of skin cancer through education and research, and we thank you for all you do to amplify our message.
