It’s Fish Friday! Did you know that seahorses live in the Hudson River? As an estuary, the Hudson River has both freshwater from rivers and streams and saltwater from the Atlantic Ocean. The Hudson is saltier closer to the Atlantic Ocean, and the salt concentrations decrease on the way up the river. In New York City, ocean water flows up into the river, allowing saltwater species like the lined seahorse to inhabit the brackish water. The lined seahorse is not a very good swimmer, but it uses its tail to grab onto plant stems and other objects at the bottom of the estuary. These are tiny creatures, too – seldom more than five inches long!
