Thatch is a layer of dead grass, roots, and debris between soil and green grass. A thin layer is beneficial, but when it exceeds half an inch, it blocks water, air, and nutrients. Dethatch in early fall or late spring for cool-season grasses, when the lawn is actively growing and can recover quickly.
