Fireworks season is here! While the celebrations are exciting for many, the loud booms, bright flashes, and crowds can be overwhelming for individuals with autism or sensory sensitivities.

Here are a few ways to make this Independence Day safer and more inclusive for everyone:

💜 Give a heads-up to neighbors or friends who may be impacted
🎧 Offer noise-canceling headphones or earplugs to reduce sound sensitivity
🏠 Create a calm indoor space where someone can retreat if needed
🕒 Stick to familiar routines to help ease anxiety
🗣️ Talk ahead of time about what to expect — and have an exit plan if it gets to be too much

Observed every year around Helen Keller's birthday (June 27), this week honors the experiences, resilience, and contributions of people living with combined vision and hearing loss. At Progressive Community Network, we celebrate the full diversity of our community — including those navigating dual sensory loss — and the advocates and organizations working to expand access and inclusion for all.
