Aquatic Diagnostic Laboratory Case File: The Purple Water Mystery 🕵️‍♀️🟣

When a water trough began turning an eerie purple, the Aquatic Diagnostic Laboratory was called in to investigate. Purple water can be a harmless curiosity, but when livestock, pets, or wildlife may be drinking from it, unusual color is always worth a closer look.

The suspect lineup included purple sulfur bacteria, iron-oxidizing bacteria, and pigment-producing cyanobacteria. Water chemistry provided the first major clues: iron measured 34.3 mg/L, well above the 0.3 mg/L benchmark, while sulfate measured 438.0 mg/L, exceeding the 300 mg/L benchmark. Together, these results pointed to an iron- and sulfur-rich water source, ideal conditions for colorful bacterial growth.

In this case, the likely culprit was purple sulfur bacteria, microscopic organisms that can turn water purple as they oxidize sulfur compounds. The good news? Purple sulfur bacteria are generally harmless environmental recyclers and are not known to produce toxins or cause disease.

But color alone cannot close the case. Some cyanobacteria can also produce purple pigments, and certain species may release toxins that are dangerous to livestock, pets, fish, and wildlife.

The takeaway: mysteriously colored water deserves investigation. Water chemistry can reveal important clues, but toxin testing may be needed before declaring a water source safe for animals.
