Here are two photos (top and bottom) of a typical CPU cooler in a desktop computer. Without a cooler, your main processor in a desktop computer would overheat and suffer damage before your system completes the startup.

NOTE that this is a CLEAN CPU cooler! Notice the fins are pretty close together. We often see coolers that are clogged with dust underneath the fan. If it is clogged, air won't pass by the fins, and the cooler won't keep the CPU cool!
