When a client complains of low productivity, I’ll ask them how much time they take to renew.

The answer is usually a blank stare and a murmured, "What do you mean?"

This tells me that they are not taking time to recharge and refresh.

When I ask them to take two hours this week to do something they love and have fun doing…guess what?

Their productivity has improved dramatically, and we haven’t done anything about their mechanics yet.

Action Step:

1. I hereby give you permission to take at least two hours this week just for yourself.
2. Take a hot bath with candles and relax.
3. Take a bike ride.
4. Read a fun book.
5. Sit in the park and watch squirrels.
6. Do something out of the ordinary and let me know how it worked for you.
7. The worst thing to happen is that you’re gonna have some fun.

A technique I use and teach is called Absorptive Listening.

It’s a form of deep listening that soaks up what another person is saying as if you are a sponge.

To make this work, let your mind be quiet and just take it in.

You don’t have to prepare an answer until a response is required.

This is not as easy as it sounds.

The reason is most of us are very busy thinking about what to say next, worried about what is going to happen next, thinking about our next appointment, or …

You get the picture.

The magic in this type of communication is that you are being in the moment with the other person.

When you are just being and listening, magic happens.

They feel heard.

Once they feel heard they will open up and you’ll get to know them at a deeper level.

This deeper level is what begins to build a relationship and trust.

Trust is the spark that makes a sale or opportunity happen.

To have more opportunities do this Action Step.

Action Step:

1. Choose to listen like a sponge with your next conversation.

2. Notice when you go away from the conversation.

3. When you mentally drift away gently bring yourself back to it.

4. Repeat.

5. Notice how you feel.
