Mommy here: There are some things I look at a hundred times and they never get old. Moments like this are one of them.
Bridger and Bodie…two little rescue dogs. Two completely different personalities. Two lives that could have looked so different. And somehow, here they are—squished together, tongues out, completely content to just be close.
Sometimes I look at our crew and think about how little dogs actually ask of us. A soft place to land. A full belly. Relief when something hurts. Someone who notices when they need help. Someone who stays. And then they give us everything.
Bodie is getting older now, and that makes these ordinary little moments feel a little less ordinary to me. I know better than to take them for granted. So I take the pictures. I watch them sleep. I laugh at their ridiculous little faces. I let them pile on top of one another and take up entirely too much room.
Because someday, these will be the moments I would give anything to have back.
For today, though, I get to look over and see these two little faces together. Safe. Loved. Warm. Completely unaware that Mommy is getting emotional over them again. They just know this is home. And maybe that’s the very best thing we’ve ever been able to give them.
Last night, a few of us Tiny Mighties were called into official NMDR service.
Mommy and Daddy were representing NMDR at a local festival, and some of the shelter dogs came along to meet everybody and show off their adoptable selves.
They did a wonderful job. But eventually they got tired. And apparently when the professional representatives need a break, management sends in the reserves. Us.
We would like to be clear that absolutely no one checked our résumés. Our qualifications included:
Being small enough to carry
Being willing to accept public admiration
Extensive experience being told “OH MY GOSH LOOK AT YOU”
And absolutely no understanding of what NMDR’s talking points are
But we stepped up. We met people. We accepted pets. We represented the organization with dignity and professionalism.
Well. Most of us did. Because just as Mommy and Daddy were probably thinking, Look at our wonderful little ambassadors, Bridger decided his shift was over and immediately threw himself onto the ground and began rolling in the dirt.
Not a little roll, either. Full-body. Back scratching. Legs flailing.
Grinding himself into the earth like he was trying to become one with Missouri.
Mommy: BRIDGER!
Bridger: I AM OFF THE CLOCK.
So if you met us last night, thank you for stopping by the NMDR booth. We hope we represented the mission well.
And if you saw a small Yorkie aggressively breading himself in dirt at the end of the evening…No you didn’t.
🚨 THE CAVE HAS BEEN RAIDED. 🚨
Kinzey here: Daddy made a grave mistake. He cleaned out my cave bed. Apparently, he was under the impression it was a dog bed. Sir, that is my private residence and off-site storage facility.
During his unauthorized search, Daddy discovered…His socks. Lots of them. Socks he claims have been “missing.”
Interesting choice of words. They weren’t missing. I knew exactly where they were. And before anyone starts throwing around ugly words like “thief,” I would like to clarify that my cave operates on a very simple policy: If I can carry it in my mouth, it becomes mine.
Socks. Toys. Chewies. Random pieces of paper. Things nobody even realized they owned until they saw me sprinting away with them. I’m not stealing. I’m curating.
Unfortunately, the secret is now out and Daddy has recovered his property. So tonight I begin again. He has two feet. There will be more socks.
