Today's Reading: John 4:1-30

Today's Artwork: Christ and the Samaritan Woman by James Tissot

In today's reading, Jesus sits beside a well and has a conversation no one expected him to have. The disciples see a Samaritan woman. The town likely sees her reputation. Jesus sees a person.

One of the beautiful things about Jesus is his ability to tell the truth without taking away someone's dignity. He doesn't ignore her story, but neither does he reduce her to it. He speaks honestly, offers grace freely, and awakens hope where shame had been living for a long time.

As you look at the painting and read the story, pay attention to the way Jesus looks at her. Then consider this question: What might change if you believed Jesus sees you with that same combination of truth, grace, and compassion?

REFLECT
What stands out to you in this conversation between Jesus and the woman?
What does this story teach us about the way Jesus sees people?
Where do you need to receive Jesus' grace today?

PRAYER
Jesus, thank you for seeing us completely and loving us still. Give us the courage to be honest about our lives and the confidence to receive your grace. Teach us to see others the way you see them—with truth, compassion, and hope. Amen.

The Little Children Brought to Jesus — James Tissot

A Reminder From Sunday
We become what we behold. Spend a few moments today imagining yourself in this scene. Watch how Jesus responds to the children. Notice what captures his attention. Notice who he makes room for.

A Few Things to Notice
The disciples see an interruption. Jesus sees an opportunity. The people bringing the children don't seem to think they have much to offer. Jesus welcomes them anyway. Jesus doesn't merely tolerate the children. He embraces them, blesses them, and places them at the center of the lesson.

The Kingdom of God often looks different than we expect. It has a way of elevating the people the world tends to overlook.

Reflect
What do you find beautiful about Jesus in this story?
Who are the people our culture tends to overlook or dismiss?
Where might God be inviting you to slow down and pay attention to someone you might otherwise pass by?

Prayer
Jesus, your attention is beautiful. You notice people others ignore. You make room for those others push aside. As I behold you today, teach me to see people the way you do. Give me your eyes, your patience, and your love. Amen.
