You’ve heard it- people are quitting their jobs in record numbers. You may even be one of them or know someone who has just turned in their notice. I spoke with a client last week who said she quit the job that she’d had for 6 years because “I no longer really enjoyed it, and plus, they didn’t give us an increase or a bonus in 2 years.” She quit this job without another job so she has zero income coming in, but she is confident that she will land a new job in a new career field in a brand-new city where she knows no one for at least $10k more than she was making. Let's be realistic. I'm not sure that's a reality.

I tried to dig deep to get answers as to why she no longer enjoyed the work…and she could only say that it was no longer fulfilling. She couldn’t articulate really what she wanted to do…she just knew it wasn’t what she was doing.

A piece of advice: don’t quit your job without knowing the answers to some very critical questions:

1. Why do I want to quit? What is it about this job, this boss, this company that I don’t like?

2. What do I want to do? What type of company do I want to work for? What type of boss do I want to work for? What type of coworkers do I want to work with? Why do I want to do X? and what value do I bring to the table for X? Can I articulate why a company should hire me for X?

3. What role do I personally play in my unhappiness in this current position???? And will getting another job fix that? What do I need to do to ensure that this next job will bring me what I’m looking for?

4. If I quit without another job, how long am I going to give myself to land Preferred Job #1 before I HAVE to take Job #2 or Job #3 on my list in order to pay my bills?

The grass is not always greener on the other side. And if you don’t spend some quality time answering the questions laid out above, you will likely take a job where you literally may be going from the frying pan to the fire because you haven’t assessed what you need to in order to avoid what could be even a worse situation than you were originally in.
