Feeling grateful as I sift through photos from a few sessions with the Dutch Fork High School volleyball team. This year has been filled with so many opportunities that have helped me grow as an instructor. Thanks so much Coach Raveen and the squad over there for seeing the value in this practice.

Reflecting on this breathing exercise I got to do with some cute little yogis this summer π
The goal is to teach children how to find and deepen their breathing during chaotic moments. Think test times, sibling quarrels, tantrums, etc.
That "fight or flight" feeling is a stress response, often accompanied by shortness of breath, which reduces oxygen intake and exacerbates anxiety (Harvard Health). Diaphragmatic breathing or deep breathing can slow the heart rate, reduce blood pressure, and facilitate full oxygen exchange - encouraging the body to relax and the mind to clear during times of stress.
And so, I had these little yogis run around to get their heart rates up. Then they stopped and placed one hand on their belly and the other on their heart. Got *really* quiet. Found their breath and a moment of peace. Then moved on.
A simple practice and science-backed.
