A house is listed as contingent when the seller has already accepted a buyers offer on their home, and they are waiting for certain criteria's to be met before the final sale can go through. These criteria's could be based on the home inspection, buyers financing, the sale of a buyers current home, etc. The home will move to closed when the criteria's are met or will go back to active and then be available to other buyers if they are not.

This is very common for most buyers. When moving from one home to another, a buyer makes their new home purchase contingent on the selling of their old home. This is done for financing purposes. Some mortgage companies can offer bridge loans which can be used when trying to move and connecting your old mortgage to your new one.
