Battle rap is an exciting and very entertaining platform. The compositions of these emcees are nothing short of amazing. The Creativity in this art form is definitely alive and breathing. But as I grow older, all the killing and humiliation that's at the forefront of making it what it is, it's becoming too troubling for me to reason with.
I remember when a rap battle was creating imaginative themes, storytelling and showing your skill of rhythmic rhyming words. Whoever had the most intense crowd reaction would have won the war. Examples of this are songs like "Men At Work" by Kool G rap or "Raw" By Big Daddy Kane. No gun bars, no family insults, just skill and imagination.
Some artists still carry on this cultural tradition today, like "Black thought," who showed up and showed out on Funk Master Flex Show and murdered it without one gun bar.
He left whoever heard the freestyle with their face twisted up with the bar raised. Breathe control showing his professionalism without skipping a beat, head nod therapy.
This is the feeling that's missing. We replaced it with genocide, hurtful slander and provocation.
This magical art form our people created is evolving backwards. No one talks about it because it's ours and feeding families, but it doesn't make it right.

We have young men so ego-driven that they can't walk away from a disagreement without disrespecting others. They can't walk away from disrespect without a physical altercation leading to murder.
Being black in America, we have a fire in us, but there are times we are burning ourselves and each other.
