Setting the table.

I started my business to help others set the table for their meaningful celebrations. To paraphrase , this art of gathering is about so much more than knowing where the fish knives go or how to obey the finicky traditions set by - let's face it - rich old white people.

No, setting the table is about creating a physical and emotional space that honors, welcomes and lifts others into an experience of genuine connection. This cannot begin with a checklist or color palette. It has little to do with the type of wine glass or place card you select. It starts with empathy.

How can we create moments of meaning if we can't imagine what life is like for other people? If we cannot close our eyes and feel the wide range of joy and pain stir inside ourselves as they might for someone else? If we don't question our narrow-minded beliefs about aesthetics and strive to see beauty through the eyes of another?

As a human being and an events professional, I commit to practicing empathy. I say "practice" because I won't always get it perfect. Sometimes, as in other forms of practice, the only way to get better is through making mistakes. But to contribute well to a team, or to the world, the key is to learn from those mistakes and strive never to repeat them. This my goal. I promise to think, speak and act with empathy to the very best of my ability. And, should my ability fail, I will seek to get better.

Promises matter. Our country promises that everyone has a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It promises due process for all in the eyes of the law. For too long we have failed in that promise, specifically to the black community. White Americans, including myself, have allowed an egregious lack of empathy to trample the rights of black people everywhere. George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, Ahmaud Arbery and countless other black individuals who were murdered at the hands of police officers and hateful civilians didn't get their due process. When her beloved grandmother passed and left her a lovely spot of land in Springfield, Ohio, Jordan knew it was meant to be a place to celebrate love. She poured her creativity and countless hours of her own elbow grease into building her vision of a modern farmhouse. And then, this stupid virus took hold. Weddings had to be postponed, even cancelled. I know Jordan probably has rough days like the rest of us in this industry, but I must say: she has handled this crisis with a wealth of grace and compassion that comes from someplace deep. She has stayed true to her purpose of creating a space from love, and continues to extend that honor to others.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
