Meet STORY fiction editor: Joe Baumann

Joe Baumann is the author of six collections of short fiction, most recently A Thing Is Only Known When It Is Gone, from University of Wisconsin Press, and the novels I Know You’re Out There Somewhere and Lake, Drive. His fiction and essays have appeared in Third Coast, Passages North, Phantom Drift, and many others. He possesses a PhD in English from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. He was a 2019 Lambda Literary Fellow in Fiction and currently directs the MFA in Writing at Lindenwood University. He can be reached at joebaumann.wordpress.com.

We are proud to announce the winner of our 7th annual Story Foundation Prize. Our judge, Deesha Philyaw, has selected “Shame Shame” by Reema Rao of Chicago, IL as this year’s prize winner. Her story will be featured in our summer 2026 issue, which will be released in July.

Congratulations as well to our finalists! This year we once again received more than 600 entries, which means we read more wonderful stories than ever before! We’re grateful to all the entrants for the opportunity to read and consider their work.
